Kulsoom Nawaz’s body shifted to Jati Umra, funeral to be offered at 5pm

LAHORE (Muslim Times) – The Namaz-e-Janaza (Funeral prayer) of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, wife of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, will be offered at Sharif Medical City, Raiwind near Lahore today (Friday).

Significant political pesonalities including National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser, Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjarani, Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Khurshid Shah will attend the funeral. Delegations of PPP, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) will aslo arrive for condolence.

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, the wife of former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif, passed away at London’s Harley Street Clinic on Tuesday after a prolonged battle with cancer.

A PIA flight carrying the casket landed at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore at 6:40am today from where it was shifted to Sharif Medical Comlex, Jati Umra amid strict security.

At least 13 family members including PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif, Zakariya Hussain Sharif, Asma Dar, Haleema Dar,Usman Dar, Asif
Baig Mirza, Khadija Mirza, Saira Saleh, Ijaz Gull, Samia Tariq, Nargis Butt returned on the same flight.

Kulsoom’s nephews Hamza Shehbaz, Salman Shehbaz, Yousaf Abbas, Aziz Abbas and Ata Tarar were present at the airport to receive the coffin.

A special immigration counter was set up at the Hajj Terminal of the airport in order to facilitate the early clearance of all those who arrived with her body.

The former first lady’s funeral prayer will be offered at 5:00pm at Sharif Medical City playgrounds following which she will be laid to rest beside the grave of her father-in-law Mian Sharif at Jati Umra.

Religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil will lead the prayers. A large number of people including party workers are visitng the residence of Nawaz to offer their condolences.
