Egypt’s Sisi says Arab countries face imploding from within

Muslim Times(Web Desk) – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has warned in a speech at a military academy graduation ceremony in Cairo that Arab countries, including Egypt, are vulnerable to imploding from within.

“The real danger is blowing up countries from within. Rumors, acts of terrorism, loss of hope and feeling of frustration, all these work in a grand network aimed at one objective, only one objective, and that is to move people to destroy their country,” Sisi said Sunday.

The mastermind of the July 2013 military coup against Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically-elected president, said his government had detected 21,000 false rumors over a period of three months.

“Destroying our countries will not happen unless it came from within. We must be alert and pay attention to what is being spun against us in secret,” Sisi added, without naming any party.

Sisi came to power as president in June 2014 after winning a landslide victory in the presidential election held a month earlier with securing nearly 97 percent of the vote.

His government has been cracking down on any opposition, in which hundreds of Morsi supporters have been killed in clashes with Egyptian security forces over the past few years.

Sisi’s government has faced criticism from ordinary Egyptians over the raising of fuel, electricity and transportation prices, under an IMF reform plan calling for austerity measures that have made life tougher for many Egyptians.

The cash-strapped Sisi administration has been trying to persuade the public that painful austerity measures would be to their benefit. However, frustration is high among Egypt’s 90 million-strong population.

On Sunday, Sisi said he understood the economic hardships that ordinary Egyptians are enduring due to economic reforms. However, nothing justifies “causing chaos and destroying the state,” he added.
