Russia, India vow to work toward multipolar world

Muslim Times(Web Desk) – India and Russia have pledged to work toward a strong multipolar world during a recently held informal summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The day-long summit on Monday in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi focused on a range of bilateral topics, including defense cooperation as well as global issues of common concern.

“They agreed on the importance of building a multipolar world order. They decided to intensify consultation and coordination with each other, including on the Indo-Pacific Region,” the Indian government said in a statement.

The two leaders also agreed to continue working together through multilateral organizations such as the United Nations and BRICS.

BRICS is the acronym for an association of the five major emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. They are distinguished by their large, fast-growing economies and significant influence on regional and global affairs.

They also reiterated the significance of longstanding partnership in the military, security and nuclear energy fields.

Last month, India was to finalize a weapons deal to buy Russian-made S-400 missile defense systems reportedly unimpressed by US-made Patriot missile systems’ repeated failures.

In recent years, Washington has been trying to isolate India from China and Russia as some.

In May 2016, an analyst told Press TV that some US lawmakers reportedly were pushing for a partnership status for India similar to that of America’s allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The latest meeting comes days after Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Wuhan for an informal summit.

Amid increasing global challenges and the unsettling rules of governance followed by the administration of US President Donald Trump, discussions around foreign policy and enhanced coordination among nations are gaining prominence.
