(Web Desk) – Indian police have arrested a 26-year-old woman who allegedly posed as a man and tricked two women into marriage for dowry.
Formerly known as Sweety, police believe Krishna Sen had been masquerading as a man since 2014 when she first married.
According to BBC, Sen was arrested on Wednesday in the northern state of Uttarakhand for demanding dowry – a practice that is illegal in India since 1961.
Senior police officer Janamejay Khanduri told the BBC that while initially they failed to comprehend what Sen was saying, a medical examination conducted later revealed that Sen was actually a woman.
Sen separated from her first wife soon after the wedding, and married another woman in April 2017.
Her former in-laws lodged a police complaint accusing her of harassing their daughter for a dowry. They also claimed she had borrowed Rs. 850,000 from them to start a business.
Both the women she married didn t seem to have suspected her. Police claimed she was never sexually intimate with them.
According to police, Sen told them she had always wanted to be a boy and live a “man s life”. But they were unclear if Sen s parents were aware of what she was doing.
Sen not only pretended to be a man, she managed to live a life typical of men in India. Police authorities said Sen mostly hung out with male friends and spoke in a different tone of voice, in a bid to ward off any suspicion.
“With male hairstyle, dress and behaviour, Krishna used to live a male life. Nobody ever doubted Krishna,” another police officer said. She even walked like a “confident man”, he added.
