Trump trying to delegitimize US intelligence report: Brennan

Former CIA Director John Brennan says US President Donald Trump is trying to “delegitimize” a conclusion by the US intelligence community on Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 election, which put the New York billionaire in office.

Brennan made the comments on CNN on Sunday, a day after Trump called him a political hack like former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former FBI Director James Comey.

The three were in charge in January when the declassified report was released. It alleged that Russia helped with his campaign effort ahead of winning the White House, an allegation dismissed both by Moscow and Trump.

“Well first of all, he was referring to us as political hacks because he was trying to delegitimize the intelligence community assessment that was done,” said the former director of the US Central Intelligence Agency.

The US president tried to undermine the report on Saturday, saying, “And then you hear it’s 17 agencies. Well, it’s three. And one is Brennan and one is whatever. I mean, give me a break. They’re political hacks… So you look at it — I mean, you have Brennan, you have Clapper, and you have Comey. Comey is proven now to be a liar and he’s proven to be a leaker.”

Comey was fired by Trump as he was heading an investigation into Trump’s ties with Russia and possible collusion between the two side during the 2016 campaign and transition.

A special council is currently investigating ties between Trump associates and the Kremlin to find out evidence of possible collusion.
