Protests erupt at Trump rally in New York

Police in New York have made at least a couple of arrests during a counter rally as Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump was addressing supporters in Long Island, in his home state.

The Wednesday arrests came as several hundred anti-Trump protesters confronted over 12,000 Trump supporters who turned up for a campaign rally in Bethpage, Long Island.

As the venue reached its capacity, anti-Trump protesters faced off against Trump supporters in the street outside an old airplane hangar, where the rally was taking place.

Police deployed quickly to separate the two sides and prevent any violent incidents.

Two people were arrested inside the venue for fighting.

This was Trump’s first rally in New York where the latest polls put him leading there, with 52 percent of the vote, while Republican rival John Kasich trails with 25 percent and Ted Cruz forecasted to come in third with 17 percent of the vote.

The business mogul once again attacked rival Cruz and Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, casting doubt over their future in the race to the White House.

The New York State primary is set to take place on April 19.

Trump has been under fire for making defamatory remarks against minorities in the US. His comments include calling for a total ban on Muslims from coming to America and forced deportation of Mexican migrants.
